Little or No Vapor Production — How to Fix It

3Last updated:

Fix weak or no vapor from your dry herb vaporizer. Covers packing technique, temperature, cleaning, and airpath issues.

Little or No Vapor Production — Causes and Fixes

If your vaporizer heats up but produces little or no visible vapor, the issue usually comes down to technique or maintenance rather than a hardware defect.

Packing Technique

How you pack your herbs is the single biggest factor in vapor production:

  • Grind to a medium consistency — not powder-fine, not coarse. Use a quality grinder
  • Pack with moderate firmness — too tight restricts airflow, too loose lets heat dissipate unevenly
  • Fill the chamber to about 70-80% capacity for best results
  • Herbs that are too dry produce thin vapor. Ideal moisture is around 58-62% RH

Temperature Too Low

  • Start at 190-200°C for clearly visible vapor
  • Below 180°C you may still extract compounds but won't see much vapor
  • Increase temperature in 5°C increments until you reach your desired vapor density

Dirty Chamber

Residue buildup blocks airflow and reduces heating efficiency:

  • Clean the chamber every 3-5 sessions
  • Use a small brush to remove loose debris while the device is still warm (not hot)
  • Deep clean with an IPA-soaked cotton swab once or twice a month

Blocked Airpath

  • Inspect the mouthpiece for any debris or blockage
  • Remove and clean the screen filter, or replace it if it's clogged
  • Try drawing through the device without herbs loaded — if airflow feels restricted, there's a blockage

Tip: After cleaning, run a Burn-off cycle at maximum temperature with an empty chamber for 1-2 heating cycles. This burns off any remaining residue and alcohol.

Quick Fix Checklist

1. Re-grind your herbs to medium consistency

2. Pack the chamber to 70-80% with moderate firmness

3. Set temperature to 195-200°C

4. Clean the chamber and airpath
