Learn the correct way to inhale from a dry herb vaporizer, including Mouth-to-Lung and Direct Lung techniques.
Proper Inhalation Technique for Vaporizers
Inhaling from a dry herb vaporizer is very different from other methods. Using the wrong technique is the most common reason beginners get little or no vapor.
Rule Number One: Draw Slowly
This is the single most common mistake — most people draw way too fast:
- Draw slowly and steadily like sipping a hot drink through a straw
- Each draw should take 8-15 seconds
- Slow draws allow hot air to pass through the herbs thoroughly, extracting more compounds and flavor
- Drawing too fast cools the air before it can extract anything meaningful
Don't Rush — Wait for the Device
- Wait until the device reaches the set temperature before your first draw (watch the LED indicator)
- The first 2-3 draws may produce very little visible vapor — this is normal. These are called "flavor hits"
- Vapor will become noticeably thicker from the 3rd or 4th draw onward
Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) Technique
Best for: Beginners and devices with higher draw resistance
1. Draw vapor into your mouth first, like sipping through a straw
2. Hold it in your mouth briefly (1-2 seconds)
3. Then inhale deeply to pull the vapor into your lungs
4. Hold for 2-3 seconds and exhale
Advantages: Better control over vapor amount, smoother experience, less throat irritation
Direct Lung (DL) Technique
Best for: Experienced users and devices with open airflow
1. Inhale directly into your lungs like taking a deep breath
2. Draw slowly and steadily without pulling hard
3. Hold for 3-5 seconds
4. Exhale slowly
Advantages: More vapor per draw, more efficient extraction per session
Additional Tips
- Take a breath through your nose first to open up your airways
- Stay hydrated — warm vapor can dry out your mouth and throat
- If the vapor feels harsh, lower the temperature by 5-10°C or slow down your draw
- Clean the mouthpiece regularly for optimal airflow
